TESLA READY TO SHARE AUTOPILOT

The  leader claims that a manufacturer is interested in the FSD version of its famous Autopilot system. He also promises robot taxis soon.

Tesla fans (including journalists who have lost all common and critical sense) are convinced: everything the brand led by Elon Musk does is far ahead of the competition. However, there would be a lot to complain about, if only in terms of the batteries. But, we will limit ourselves to driving automation.

Thus, Elon Musk would have indicated to analysts, commenting on his second quarter results, that he would be in discussion with a “major manufacturer” to sell him under license the FSD (Full self driving) version of his Autopilot system. Oh yes ? He does not give a name and uses the term "early discussions", which is far from the stage where you sign a check.

The announcement is surprising, because Tesla is rather in the eye of the storm regarding its driving management system. Which only reaches level 2, on a scale of 1 to 5. It should also be remembered that the brand only relies on artificial vision, while the industry judges that it is more efficient to combine several sensors, including lidar. And as far as we know, Tesla doesn't use ultra-detailed maps like the most advanced manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes do.

At Tesla’s shareholder’s meeting yesterday, CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla is considering licensing its “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) software to other automakers:

I think Tesla’s open to licensing autonomy because I think autonomy will be such a significant lifesaver and preventer of injuries that it is not a technology we want to keep to ourselves. So, I think it will be morally right to license it to other manufacturers if they would like to use it.

The fact that the CEO would talk about licensing the software irked some owners as Tesla has yet to deliver Full Self-Driving to anyone, and the beta version, which is only “self-driving” in name, is only in the hands of a small fraction of owners who paid for it.
